Leap Local

As part of the MBA programme, we undertake a consulting project for a local startup business. My team chose to work with Leap Local, a sustainable tourism website, which aims to alleviate poverty in lesser developed countries through giving local communities access to tourism.

This afternoon we met our client to discuss the scope of the project. We are going to be analysing how the company can be profitable whilst providing a free service to its customers: both tourists and the local communities.

Recruitment

Every single day, a minimum of 5 top recruiters come to Cambridge, trying to attract graduate applications. They include the full range of employers from banks, consultancies and industry to government and non-profit. Today alone, Accenture, Bain & Company, Barclays Capital, Google.com and JP Morgan all came to run recruitment presentations.

Along with about 20 other MBAs, I went to hear Google.com present at the Cambridge Union. Their focus was mostly on graduate jobs, although the company representatives seemed to be very willing to talk about potential jobs for MBA grads too. Given their fast growth and reputation for career opportunity, I suspect a lot of my classmates will end up applying.

Tomorrow, Ocado.com is coming to town.

Long Sunday

Long Sunday
Today epitomised what the MBA is all about. It’s three weeks until the end of term and we have 5 deadlines to meet before then. The first is for a finance assignment, due at 9am on Tuesday. Although today is Sunday, I’ve spent the last 12 hours with my study group working to complete our submission on time… tomorrow’s out as the CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi is coming to address the MBA course.

Although we arrived at 10am in the department and, at 10pm, I’ve just got home, my study group managed to fit in lunch at The Eagle pub (see photo) and dinner at Agora.

Work hard. Play hard.
And a new week starts again tomorrow.

Wine auction at Emmanuel College

Wine Auction
Last night was one of my more surreal evenings in Cambridge.   I was invited to a wine tasting and auction at Emmanuel College, which took place in the oak panelled old library. As we sat below centuries old oil paintings of former college presidents and amongst the great and good of Cambridge, we tasted a selection of wines whilst the college auctioned off dozens of bottles, for the benefit of Cambridge RAG. Even more obscure was that the auctioneer fell off his bike on the way to the auction, and so a member of the audience stood up and, off the cuff, gave the most superb tasting notes on pretty much every bottle of wine auctioned.

The auctioned wine was donated by a number of colleges, from their cellared collections. I ended up bidding on, and winning, a cheeky Chateau Cantenac Brown (1995), which will complement a good dinner at the end of term.

Whilst the Cambridge MBA may be similar to those of other top European business schools, the distinct advantage of coming to Cambridge is everything else the university has to offer. It's nights like these that remind me exactly what it is that makes Cambridge such a special place to study.

Sir Paul Judge

Sir Paul Judge's Party
Sir Paul Judge, the benefactor of the Judge Business School, holds an annual Christmas party in his home for those who have recently joined the school. On Saturday, around 150 MBA and MPhil students went down to London for this black tie event.

Sir Paul is the consummate host. The combination of his bonhomie and hospitality made for a very eventful evening. To top it all, his 18th floor penthouse overlooking the River Thames has a spectacular view of London. Overlooking the bright lights of the city, we ate, drank, danced, socialised and partied the night away.

After the party ended, 15 of us headed down to Adam Street for an after party, where we danced until the early hours.
